Community University

Youngstown State University is a comprehensive, public, not-for-profit institution that plays a vital role in driving the economy and supporting the educational, financial, and social well-being of Northeast Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, and beyond. With nearly 11,000 students, over 1,500 employees, and a global network of close to 113,000 alumni, YSU takes pride in shaping brighter futures by helping students discover, share, and apply their knowledge. Now in its 115th year, YSU remains dedicated to raising the bar in everything it does and to providing the leadership and opportunities needed to make the region a better place to live, learn, and thrive.
YSU’s story began in 1908 when the local YMCA started a school of law under the Youngstown Association School. Over the next sixty years, it grew into the Youngstown Institute of Technology, then Youngstown College, Youngstown University, and finally became Youngstown State University in 1967, joining the Ohio state system. As the Mahoning and Shenango valleys transition from their industrial roots, YSU stands out more than ever as a catalyst for the future—drawing talented faculty and staff to the area, boosting the local economy, leading workforce education and innovation, and graduating dynamic students ready to leave their mark on the world.
YSU holds accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission, with its accreditation reaffirmed through 2027 following the most recent HLC site visit in 2018.

A cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.7 on a 4.0 scale is generally required. Some programs may have higher GPA requirements.
Program Preparation
You must have the appropriate academic background for the graduate program you want to enter, as specified by that department.
English Proficiency
If your primary language is not English, the university may require you to complete a test to demonstrate your written and spoken English skills.
Applicants with a GPA below 2.7
If your undergraduate GPA is below 2.7, you will need to submit a satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), the Miller Analogies Test (MAT), or another graduate-level subject-specific exam as required by the program.
Additional Program Requirements
It is important to review the specific admission requirements for your chosen program, as there may be additional requirements or tests needed for admission.
